A number we are likely to know: 400 million. That’s the number of people who live without electricity in India. As of 2010, it is estimated that 48% of rural households are not covered under electricity grid nationally; Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa have electrified fewer than 35% of rural households. Of a total of 29 states of India, only 9 states have achieved 100 percent village electrification as on the 31st August 2013.
Two US born – Nikhil Jaisinghani and Brian Shaad – saw this as an untapped market and incorporated “Mera gao Power” in 2009 and stepped into rural marketing in India of which many people were sceptical at that time.
